CBC and Media Headquarters announced today that Electus International, the global distribution arm of Ben Silverman’s multimedia studio, Electus, will be the worldwide distributor for CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON, a groundbreaking format and interactive television experience that redefines what it means to be smart.

“We’re excited to be working with great partners to develop innovative formats like Canada’s Smartest Person that resonate and engage viewers in a social television experience,” said Julie Bristow, CBC’s Executive Director of Studio and Unscripted Programming. “We’re thrilled Electus has added this to their slate of programming to bring this experience to viewers around the world.”

“We are delighted to be joining forces with Electus to bring Canada’s Smartest Person to the global market,” said Robert Cohen, Creator and Executive Producer of Canada’s Smartest Person. “Canada’s Smartest Person is a format that transcends borders with a cutting edge definition of smarts. With so many great champions of this project we’re excited about where it’s going.”

CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON (an original Media Headquarters production produced in association with CBC Television and Group M Entertainment and with the participation of the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund) is a prime time event that draws upon the latest research to show that there is more to being smart than having a high IQ, or being a whiz at math or trivia. Four top finalists, chosen through a nation-wide application process, undergo fun and spectacular challenges in each category of smarts. The person who proves they have the most versatile smarts in the country, with strengths across the board, earns the title of Canada’s Smartest Person. Whether it is navigating an “intelligence obstacle course” at breakneck speed, improvising a speech using random words, or deciphering a musical mystery, every kind of smarts will be challenged.

During the broadcast, viewers are able to go head to head with the finalists on their smart phone, tablet or home computer using an innovative and interactive app. The Canada’s Smartest Person app features challenges synchronized in real time. Viewers can put their own wits to the test, discover more about their personal smarts and see how they compare to family members, friends and the rest of the country. Viewers can prepare for the broadcast by taking a “How Are You Smart” Facebook test designed to identify primary and secondary intelligence strengths. Users can share their “intelligence identity” on social media platforms and invite others to take the test as well.

CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON is Created and Executive Produced by Robert Cohen. The show is also Executive Produced by Shari Cohen.

Dr. Howard Gardner, a psychologist and professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard University, pioneered the theory of multiple intelligences in 1983.

Postmedia News – By Alex Strachan – March 14, 2012

Toronto comedian Gerry Dee — self-described “dummy” former teacher, creator and star of the CBC Monday-night comedy, Mr. D, and host of this weekend’s smarty-pants contest, Canada’s Smartest Person — has his own definition of “smart,” one that has little to do with book knowledge or dictionary definitions.

Canada’s Smartest Person presents “a new way of looking at ‘smart,’” Dee said, shouting into his cellphone, more than 2,000 miles of crackling static away. (That’s 3,200 kilometres in Canadian.) The cellphone was obviously invented by a smart person. The service provider — not so much.

The show’s definition is based on Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence, which measures a person’s intelligence based on his or her ability to excel in six main areas of intelligence: logic ability, visualization and recognition, physical prowess, facility in language and communication, music intelligence and social aptitude.

It isn’t just about being a math geek, in other words. It helps to be able to fix a car.

Most people, scientists and educators agree, are strong in two or three areas of intelligence. The truly gifted person — the person in the room everyone learns to hate, or envy — is equally strong in all areas.

Such people are rare indeed, and Canada’s Smartest Person hopes to single out one such individual from four finalists this Sunday, March 18, on CBC.

The four, who have already shown aptitude in all six areas of intelligence (or they wouldn’t have made it to the final) include: a former CFL football lineman; a math geek and obsessive video gamer; a high-school science teacher who doubles — dabbles? — as a standup comedian and singer-songwriter; and a slam poet and spoken-word artist who once toiled as a policy analyst for the federal government. And you thought your taxes went to waste.

Dee says it’s important that Canada’s Smartest Person be interesting, but also fun.

“I’m a competitive person; I like trying the challenges myself and seeing if I could beat these people. It has a very sports feel to it, which is in line with what I like and do.

”There’s something to be said for competitiveness. Someone who’s competitive will find a way to win, find a way to succeed. I believe that. Some people are just quite happy to just be there, and others say, ‘I’ve got to be here and I’ve got to be the best.’”

“After meeting the four contestants, there are some that you would stereotypically say, ‘That is who I would always view as a smart person,’” Dee said. “There are others who you would not view as a stereotypically smart person. And then you would be surprised by the results, when you see them. Sometimes it’s the person you wouldn’t expect who does the best, and vice versa.”

Knowing the secret of the universe is one thing; being able to explain it in terms everyone can understand is quite another.

“For me, the skills that are probably more important in life are people skills and presentation skills and physical skills and logic and being able to read a person and looking at people who are kind of fraudulent. That’s always something I always felt I was good at, and that my dad was good at.”

“But my dad was a bus driver, you know? He sized people up every day, because he saw them every day. It’s just a different way of assessing smarts. And, for me, it’s a more valid way than someone who can solve the theory of relativity but can’t speak in front of five people without losing it and becoming really nervous. We’re looking for the well-rounded person.”

CFL player, scientist, poet and teacher vie for title; viewers can play along in real time with CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON app

Gerry Dee, the award-winning comedian and star of CBC Television’s MR. D, will host CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON, the groundbreaking two-hour television special that will reveal that there is more to intelligence than having a high IQ score or being a whiz at math or trivia. CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON airs on CBC Television on Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT).

In 2011, Canadians had the opportunity to nominate themselves, or someone they know, as CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON. Drawing on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, show producers used interviews and tests to narrow the field to four participants with well-rounded intelligence profiles.

Airing on Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m., CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON will feature Hamilton Tiger Cats offensive lineman, Peter Dyakowski; high school science teacher, Dr. Marshall Carroll; 23-year-old student and gamer, Laura Suen; and spoken word poet, Greg Frankson participating in a series of fun and spectacular challenges aimed at testing six areas of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The person who proves that they have the most versatile smarts will earn the title of CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON.

CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON will also feature a lineup of special guest appearances by Arlene Dickinson (DRAGONS’ DEN), comedians Naomi Sniekus, Matt Baram and Sean Cullen!

Play along during the broadcast

On the night of the broadcast, CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON viewers can put their own wits to the test and play along simultaneously with the challenges online at cbc.ca/smartestperson or with an innovative app (for Apple iOS) created for the show. Available in early March, the play along app will help audiences discover more about their own intelligence and see how they compare to the four TV participants.

It’s not about how smart you are, rather how you are smart!

Beginning today, CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON viewers can prepare for the broadcast by taking a “How Are You Smart?” Facebook test designed to identify primary and secondary intelligence strengths. Users can share their “intelligence identity” on social media platforms and invite others to take the test as well. ‘Like’ the show at Facebook.com/canadassmartestperson or follow us on Twitter for more information.

Participant info

Vancouver-born Peter Dyakowski is a 27-year-old offensive linesman for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. The first Canadian-born athlete to sign a scholarship with Louisiana State University, Dyakowski balances his athleticism with his Mensa qualified intelligence.

At just 23 years old, Laura Suen from Mississauga already has a double major Honours BSc in physics and cellular and molecular biology as well as a minor in mathematics. In her free time, Suen plays video games competitively and has won over $30,000 in gaming competitions.

Dr. Marshall Carroll is a high school science teacher from Winnipeg who is educated as a theoretical quantum chemist. Also a singer-songwriter and a stand-up comedian, Carroll has been inspiring students for over 20 years.

With an ability to create poetry at the drop of a noun, Toronto’s Greg Frankson is a spoken word artist. Following a career in education in Montreal, Frankson moved to Ottawa where he became a policy analyst for the Federal Government before pursuing a full-time career as a performance artist, emcee, mental health advocate and arts educator.

CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON is an original Media Headquarters production produced in association with CBC Television. Created by Robert Cohen, executive producers are Robert Cohen and Shari Cohen. Louise Wood is the producer.

Gemini Award winning and Emmy Award nominated production company, Media Headquarters (The Summit, The Great Polar Bear Adventure, Modern Love, Outlaw In-laws), today announced that it is bringing the search for CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON to CBC Television in March 2012.

An original and groundbreaking new television special, CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON will redefine what it means to be smart. The two-hour prime-time event will be taped in front of a live studio audience and draw upon the latest research to show that there is more to intelligence than having a high IQ score, or being a whiz at math or trivia.

“For too long, the concept of intelligence has been confined to a limited view of what it means to be smart,” says Robert Cohen, Executive Producer, Media Headquarters. “CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON showcases intelligence in all its forms, inspiring Canadians to embrace their unique strengths.”

“CBC Television is thrilled to work with Media Headquarters to bring this exciting original television event to Canadians across the country,” says Kirstine Stewart, Executive Vice-President of English Services, CBC Television.

It’s not about how smart you are, rather how you are smart!

According to the internationally embraced Theory of Multiple Intelligences, there are actually several different kinds of smarts. Six main areas of intelligence are: Logical, Visual, Physical, Linguistic, Musical and Social.

CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON will feature four top participants as they undergo fun and spectacular tests in each category of intelligence. The person who proves that they have the most versatile smarts in the country will earn the title of CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON while audiences can play along at home. Whether it be uncovering lies in a sea of half-truths, navigating an obstacle course of lasers at break-neck speed, or composing a film score in less than five minutes, every kind of smarts will be challenged.

Play along at home during broadcast event using interactive app

During the telecast, viewers will be able to test themselves alongside the top TV participants from their smartphone or home computer using a new innovative and interactive app. The CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON app will feature interactive challenges synchronized with the television event. Home audiences will be able to put their own wits to the test, discover more about their personal intelligence and see how they compare to the TV participants and the rest of the country.

Apply to participate on CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON – Dec. 5 to Jan. 1

Show us your smarts! We are searching for the smartest person in the country and it could be you or someone you know. Canadians can apply themselves, or nominate someone they know, starting Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. EST to Jan. 1, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Apply at cbc.ca/smartestperson.
